Skimming is a type of fraud where criminals install special devices on ATMs or payment terminals to secretly read data from bank cards and find out PIN codes. Once they have this information, they make a copy of the card and can withdraw money from it without your knowledge.
How skimming works
Fraudsters install a skimmer on an ATM — an inconspicuous cover on the card reader through which the card passes. The device copies data from its magnetic strip.
If your card has a chip, the skimmer cannot read the data from it. However, most cards still have a magnetic strip, so the risk remains.
To obtain the PIN code, attackers use hidden mini-cameras or keyboard overlays that record keystrokes. Without the PIN code, fraudsters will not be able to withdraw cash, so these two elements — the skimmer and the camera — are usually installed together.
How to recognize an ATM with a skimmer
Pay attention to any changes in the appearance of the ATM:
- the card reader looks unusual or protrudes more than usual;
- the keyboard is not securely attached or is a different color;
- there are visible wires, holes, or lenses on the body;
- the ATM freezes, reads the card several times, or does not return it.
If you notice anything suspicious, do not use this ATM and report your suspicions to the bank.
How to protect yourself from skimming
- Use ATMs located indoors — in bank branches, shopping centers, or office buildings.
- Before making a transaction, carefully inspect the card reader and keypad.
- Cover the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN.
- Activate SMS or push notifications for all transactions.
- Set limits on cash withdrawals and purchases.
- If the ATM is not working properly, press “Cancel” and wait for your card to be returned.
What to do if you suspect skimming
- Immediately block your card via online banking or the bank's contact center.
- Notify the bank whose ATM was involved in the suspicious situation.
- Open a new card for this card account at the bank.
Remember: skimming is not a rare occurrence, but it is easy to protect your money. Just use trusted ATMs, be careful, and don't forget the simple safety rules.
